One of the Chairman’s charities this year is Epilepsy Outlook which was established in 1987 to provide advice and information for people with epilepsy and their carers, based in York Road, with its own charity shop. There are around 700 people with epilepsy in Hartlepool. Epilepsy Outlook makes a big impact, for example each year providing placements for 50 volunteers on the volunteer development programme, 280 people receiving advice including at least 100 carers; 50 plus people receiving epilepsy awareness training. 6 people use their drop-in each week. The group seeks to enhance the quality of life through one to one advice, information and support. People with uncontrollable epilepsy (30% of those with epilepsy) find it difficult to get work and are more likely to have had a disrupted education. The Group also advises carers in their caring role, which is especially important for those who also have uncontrolled epilepsy. For further information on the work of the Group contact Jacqui Gettings on 297007.The event includes quiz, disco, raffle, tombola, pie and peas (vegetarian option). Tickets cost £5 and can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre.
